Usually, we save social platform updates for the back half of Full Sync (yes, this is your cue to subscribe), but this one’s big enough to take over the whole newsletter.

Instagram content is now being indexed by Google.

Translation? Public posts from business and creator accounts on Instagram will start showing up in Google search results. Your Reels, your carousels, your carefully crafted captions — all of it could now be searchable outside the app.

It’s a pretty wild partnership when you think about it. Instagram and Google aren’t exactly known for playing in the same sandpit, but this is clearly a power move to stay relevant as search habits shift. TikTok, Reddit and ChatGPT are all stealing slices of the search pie, especially among younger audiences.

My initial take? It’s smart. I’ve had more than a few clients and collaborators ask whether Instagram is still worth their time. My answer has always been yes — and this update just made that yes even louder.

So, here’s what’s actually changing?

  • Public posts from professional accounts (that’s business or creator profiles) will now be indexed by Google

    • This includes photos, videos, Reels, carousels, captions, and hashtags

  • Stories, private accounts, and personal profiles won’t be indexed

  • If you’d rather sit this one out, you can opt out by heading to: Settings & Privacy > Privacy > Searchability > Allow public photos and videos to appear in search engine results

This update marks a big shift: Instagram is no longer a closed-loop platform. It’s becoming part of the open web — and that changes how we think about discoverability, reach, and content strategy.

Why this matters — especially if you're building a brand, business or social cause

This isn’t just a technical update. It’s a shift in how people might find you.

Instagram is now a viable part of your SEO strategy. Think of your posts as micro landing pages — little content-rich islands that could surface in search results and direct people straight to your brand.

For emerging brands, indie creators, and smaller orgs, this is huge. Google has historically favoured established players with SEO-optimised websites. Now? You could bypass all that with a well-written caption and a timely Reel.

And if you’re wondering: “What even is SEO? Is SEO that important? Am I meant to have an SEO strategy?”

Let me answer with an example, from the Build a Ballot campaign.

Throughout the campaign, we saw an extra 60k website visitors and almost 350k search impressions from non-branded SEO (think: people searching for their local candidates, not for us by name). That was the result of about 8 hours of simple SEO optimisation — and it allowed us to reach people who never saw our social content.

Combined with 2.5M+ views across social, SEO helped us bridge the gap between passive scrolling and real action. So yes — we’ll definitely be adjusting our strategy to capitalise on this Instagram update.

SEO is an incredibly powerful — and often overlooked — part of your digital strategy. And right now, you’ve got a fresh new opportunity to get in front of the right people. Don’t waste it.

So what should you do?

Here’s how to make the most of this update:

  • Switch to a professional account, make sure it’s public, and opt in to indexing

  • Before you post, think like your audience: What are they Googling? What questions are they trying to answer? Then answer those questions in your content

    • This might mean prioritising value-first content: how-tos, guides, tutorials, case studies — content people might actually search for

  • Incorporate relevant keywords naturally into your captions and on-screen video text

  • Use alt text for every post — not just for accessibility (which should always be the priority), but because it now helps with search visibility too

  • Use specific hashtags that reflect the intent of the post

  • Optimise your bio with keywords that are consistent with your website and other channels

  • Go back through your old content. Do you want it to show up in search? If so, give those captions a refresh with SEO in mind

This is a big (but exciting) shift. Your content isn’t just for the grid anymore. It’s part of the internet now! So make it count.
