I recently spent a week down in Tasmania and - as I do every time I’m on holiday - I deleted all social media and news from my phone. Every time I do this, I’m surprised by the way I can feel my brain change. My thoughts become less staccato, I can read more than 2 pages of a book at a time, I’m more engaged with conversations and the world around me.
It’s my semi-regular reminder of the way the internet is breaking my brain.
Whether you’ve done the full Anxious Generation deep dive or just felt yourself unable to stop scrolling, it’s clear that these technologies are massively impacting the way we think, work and enjoy life.
But as people who work in social-media or adjacent roles, this isn’t as simple as a pitch to throw it all away. Instead we must contemplate the question - how do we manage our relationships with social media in a way that serves us and the causes we care about?
